Charlie Hunnam Calls ‘50 Shades’ Role Loss ‘Heartbreaking’
People had a lot to say when Charlie Hunnam was cast as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of “50 Shades of Grey,’’ but Hunnam himself remained relatively mum about the role — even after dropping out of the cast to focus on his FX smash TV show, “Sons of Anarchy.’’
Life & Style caught up with Hunnam at the Huading Film Awards on Sunday, where he told the magazine that leaving the role behind a month after he was confirmed as the lead was “heartbreaking.’’
“I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey,’’ Hunnam told L&S. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place.’’
Hunnam says still intends to support the film and if he isn’t invited to the premiere, he’ll go out and buy a ticket on opening night.
Former Calvin Klein model and Irish “Once Upon a Time’’ star Jamie Dornan took over the role of the 27-year-old millionaire after Hunnam dropped out of the production. Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, will play the Grey’s love interest, Anastasia Steele.
The film is due to hit theaters Feb. 13 — just in time for Valentine’s Day.
