Elisabeth Moss quotes Margaret Atwood in stirring Golden Globes acceptance speech

“The Handmaid’s Tale” continued its awards season dominance at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, with wins for both Best Television Series Drama and Best Actress in a Television Series Drama for Elizabeth Moss. Based on the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, the show takes place in a future Cambridge, where a totalitarian Christian theonomy rules over women with an iron fist.
In her acceptance speech, Moss cited the words of Atwood to highlight the show’s relevance to the current conversation around sexual misconduct in Hollywood.
“We were the people who were not in the papers,” Moss read, quoting the novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “We lived in the blank white spaces at the edge of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories.”
Moss spent the remainder of her speech thanking women who have spoken up about intolerance and injustice.
“Margaret Atwood, this is for you, and all of the women who came before you and after you who were brave enough to speak out against intolerance and injustice and to fight for equality and freedom in this world,” Moss said. “We no longer live in the blank white spaces at the edge of print. We no longer live in the gaps between the stories. We are the story in print, and we are writing the story ourselves.”
