John Oliver weighed in on President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey on his show Sunday, blasting the president for flip-flopping over the reasoning behind the firing.

Oliver started by dissecting the letter the White House released dismissing Comey, which said that the ousted FBI director had informed Trump on three separate occasions that he was not under investigation.

“It is just inherently suspicious to try and put words in Comey’s mouth as you kick him out the door,” Oliver said. “That is the equivalent of a breakup text reading, ‘While I greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that I was the most enthusiastic, dexterous, and intuitive lover you ever had, I nevertheless must terminate your position as my girlfriend, eggplant emoji.’”

Oliver went on to talk about how the White House spent the week offering explanations for Comey’s dismissal, including that Trump acted on the advice of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who’d only been in the position about two weeks. However, Trump later contradicted all of them in an interview with Lester Holt of NBC News when he said that he made the decision to fire Comey because “this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story.”

“Trump is so desperate to appear dominant, he will rush to take the credit for anything, no matter how bad it is,” Oliver said. “If you wanted him to confess to murder, all a lawyer would have to say is, ‘Your honor, the killer could not possibly have been Donald Trump, it must have been someone much stronger, and smarter, with a much hotter daughter.’ And before they finished that sentence, Trump would be yelling, ‘I did it, it was me, lock me up! Lock me up!’”
