In an interview with Time magazine, President Donald Trump took time to rip late-night host Stephen Colbert, calling him a “no-talent guy” and “filthy,” while also claiming that his September 2015 appearance on Colbert’s show was “the highest rating [Colbert’s] ever had.”
On Thursday’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert responded with a cheerful teardown of the commander-in-chief.
“The president of the United States has personally come after me and my show, and there’s only one thing to say,” Colbert said, before dissolving into a fit of gleeful laughter. “Yay!”

“Mr. Trump, there’s a lot you don’t understand, but I never thought one of those things would be show business,” Colbert continued. “Don’t you know I’ve been trying for a year to get you to say my name? And you were very restrained, admirably restrained, but now you did it. I won.”
Next, Colbert tackled Trump’s accusation that he was “filthy,” a reference to an off-color joke the host made about Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
“You’re not wrong; I do occasionally use adult language,” Colbert said. “And I do it in public, instead of the privacy of an Access Hollywood bus.”
Colbert also burned Trump for his ratings boast, saying that Jeb Bush’s appearance on the show scored higher numbers than Trump’s.
“That’s right, you got beat by low-energy Jeb,” Colbert said. “But don’t worry, you won the ratings ‘college.”’
Near the end of the segment, Colbert suggested a plan Trump could use if he really wanted to best the CBS host.
“Since all of my success is clearly based on talking about you,” Colbert said, “if you really want to take me down, there’s an obvious way: resign.”
