Jimmy Kimmel wants Casey Affleck to win an Oscar—just to spite Matt Damon

“I would love it so much if you won an Oscar for a role that Matt opted out of,” the late-night host told the actor.

Casey Affleck’s performance in Manchester by the Sea has been called “extraordinary and engulfing,”impressive and deeply felt,” and “a career best.” Jimmy Kimmel really hopes Affleck wins an Oscar for the film, out Friday in select theaters—but it has nothing to do with Affleck’s acting chops.

Affleck stopped by Kimmel’s show Tuesday to chat about Manchester, which was produced by and originally slated to star Kimmel’s frenemy, Matt Damon. By Kimmel’s estimation, there would be no greater victory in his longstanding feud with the Bourne star than if Affleck won an Oscar for a role originally intended for Damon.

“I would love it so much if you won an Oscar for a role that Matt opted out of,” Kimmel said. “How sweet would that be? I’m going to make it my mission for the next three months to see to it, to do everything in my power to make sure that happens.”

Kimmel and Affleck also got in a friendly back-and-forth about Affleck’s tendency to not watch movies he stars in — though Affleck clarified that he had seen Manchester by the Sea.

“Do you always watch your show?” Affleck asked.

“I never watch the show, but I’m doing more than one show a year,” Kimmel shot back.

“Maybe you should do one a year,” Affleck joked.
