#FreeBrady is the ‘Donna Martin graduates!’ of our time
COMMENTARY
If you’re between the ages of 30 and 40, the #FreeBrady movement probably feels strangely familiar, because it’s essentially a recreation of Beverly Hills 90210’s best known story line.
A high school senior (Donna Martin) is punished by an evil and overzealous school official (Superintendent Ephardt) for allegedly being drunk at prom. It’s more probable than not that Donna was drunk, though no evidence is ever brought forth – aside from her vomiting and her inability to stand up.
Donna is initially suspended, which means she won’t be allowed to graduate with her friends. Convinced she is being punished too harshly, Brandon, Kelly, Steve, Brenda, Dylan, Andrea and David consider their options, and settle on organizing a mass walkout of West Beverly High School during finals.
The entire student body comes to Donna’s defense, and they all storm into a closed door meeting where the school board is hearing Donna’s appeal.
A showdown between good (Brandon, Andrea, and company) versus evil (NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell – I mean Superintendent Ephardt) ensues. Ephardt tries to hold his ground, but Donna wins the sympathy of other, less evil members of the school board, and good prevails.
And in the end, Donna Martin graduates.
