In search of the difficult-to-find Dunkin’ French Crullers

Complaints from Dunkin' customers have surfaced over the last few years about the availability, or lack thereof, of the popular French Cruller.

According to Dunkin' customers, the fan-favorite French Cruller is hard to find. But one Redditor shared recently that their Boston Dunkin' finally restocked the treat. Jonathan Wiggs/Boston Globe

At Dunkin’, menu items come and go every year, to the disappointment of its fans who had come to love the specialty coffee or treat (RIP the Dunkaccino). But so few items get the reaction that the French Cruller has in response to its mysterious disappearance at many stores.

Customers began noting its MIA status two years ago, when panicked customers sought out answers on Reddit, Facebook, and TikTok. It seems one die-hard fan even put together a Change.org petition to bring back the French Cruller, the pinwheel-shaped glazed doughnut.

“No more French Cruller” began one Reddit post. Its original poster said they called multiple stores in New Jersey and were informed the sweet treat was discontinued, while others said they had heard it was only temporarily shelved due to an ingredient shortage.

But last week, there were possible signs of hope — at least in Boston. A Redditor shared in the Boston sub-Reddit that they had finally found a French Cruller at their local Dunkin’.

“I don’t know why these have been virtually non-existent around Mass.,” colton1428 wrote. “I know they’ve been at one or two locations, but thrilled to see it at my local Dunks.”

According to The Boston Globe, however, the French Cruller has a history of going away and coming back, depending on the location of the Dunkin’ and its franchisee. The Globe reported that the French Cruller had disappeared off of some store shelves around 2009. Customers who asked what happened to the treat received varied responses, and franchisees said they’ll stock it if it’s popular among customers — and get rid of it to make room on their limited shelf space for something new if the French Cruller just isn’t selling.

When asked about French Cruller availability, a Dunkin’ spokesperson said the chain’s store menus continue to change based on customer preference.

“While its staple classics are available nationwide, like the timeless Glazed and the Boston Kreme, Dunkin’ customizes its specialty assortment for regional tastes and preferences, which is why the beloved French Cruller is available in many of our markets,” the spokesperson said.

In the name of public service journalism, we think it’s important to highlight where these rare Dunkin’ locations are that serve French Crullers.

So we need your help. Have you seen a Dunkin’ French Cruller out in the wild? You provide the address so we can put it in a list to help other Greater Boston French Cruller devotees out.

Or if you’ve given up on your hunt for the French Cruller and found a suitable alternative at a small local business instead, give them a shout out below.
