‘Because I still can’: Why this 70-year-old is running the Boston Marathon

"It is a privilege and an inspiration to be there again."

Mary Ann Roberts is running Boston at age 70 in honor of the 50th anniversary of Women in Boston.

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Mary Ann Roberts
Age: 70
From: Washington D.C.

I am running Boston 126th because I still can. At 70, the 50th anniversary of women in Boston, it is a privilege and an inspiration to be there again.

Recalling the history of Paul Revere’s ride, the fight for freedom, independence, and courage. Boston Strong. B.A.A. integrity, volunteers smiling in the wind and cold, heat and rain! Cheering patriots encouraging you to keep going “you’re almost there” even in Hopkinton! Heartbreak Hill!!!

Cops and T conductors, waiters and waitresses, the Old South Church runners service. Through breast cancer, the death of Dad, and the endless personal stories. I cry with gratitude every time I cross the finish line while hugging a volunteer. Boston BEST. And then I will salute Dave [McGillivray] knowing he will run the course after the 30,000 are safely through.

Brava, Boston for all you do for so many.
