In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

Name: Matt Lutkins
Age: 20
From: Camp Hill, Penn.

Ever since I started studying sociology and economics at Boston University, I’ve always been interested in the socioeconomic factors that uplift some people and disadvantage others. This fascination with class differences and social inequality sparked a desire within me to represent and assist people in need. Back on My Feet was a perfect organization to do this through, especially with the upcoming 2024 Boston Marathon.

Back on My Feet combines my passion for running and uses fitness to combat homelessness throughout the United States. I was really inspired by their mission of hosting Circle Ups to unite people in homeless shelters and addiction treatment facilities through running, walking, or jogging. This new lifestyle brings about structured change in the lives of the disadvantaged and connects them with new, communal support groups that help improve their lives. This charitable message was so impactful to me.

By running on behalf of Back on My Feet for the 2024 Boston Marathon, I feel as though I can directly make an impact on society and help the homeless and disadvantaged pursue better, more prosperous lives.
