In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

From: Summit, New Jersey

My name is Anthony Yu, and I am a senior at Tufts University. My mother and I will be running the 2025 Boston Marathon together. As a member of the Tufts Marathon Team, under the coaching of Don Megerle—renowned for his accomplishments in collegiate swimming—I have been deeply inspired by my mother’s lifelong dedication to running. She is not only a 20-time marathoner and a full Ironman triathlon finisher, but also a six-star marathon finisher, an honor earned by approximately 2,000 women in the United States who have completed the six “major marathons.”

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the consistency and passion my mother brought to her athletic pursuits. In my junior year, when I discovered the Tufts Marathon Team, I committed to running as a tribute to her love for the sport and as a means to bring together two of her greatest passions: running and her family. This April, my mother and I will embark on this journey from start to finish at the Boston Marathon, hoping to honor her achievements and the values she instilled in me.
