In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
Name: Andrea Battinelli
Age: 54
From: Winchester, Mass.
I’m honored to be running my first Boston Marathon this April — and even more proud to do it as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) team. Dana-Farber’s mission to end cancer, their groundbreaking research and compassionate care gives hope to so many families — including the McGoverns.
The McGovern family has faced incredible challenges and loss, losing two beloved members to cancer, with a third, Cass, now healthy and happy. Their strength inspires me, and every step I take on Marathon Monday will be for them and many more.
Running Boston has been a lifelong dream. I have admired the legendary challenges, deep-rooted tradition, and the vibrant energy of the Boston community. My love for running comes from my dad and uncles — their dedication to the sport has been my inspiration. Losing my uncles was a tremendous loss for my family. This year’s race will be my seventh marathon and as a physical education teacher in Winchester, I believe in the power of movement, health, and resilience.
I’d be so grateful for your support, I look forward to crossing that finish line.
