How losing her ‘biggest cheerleader’ led her to the Boston Marathon

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Gabrielle Clark

Age: 28

From: North Attleboro, Mass.

On March 11, 2015 I lost my dad to aggressive prostate cancer — 2025 is his 10 year anniversary. I want to honor his memory by crossing that finish line for him. My dad was my best friend. I am so glad I get to run for him and raise money for cancer research.

In 2012, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He started chemo right away and things were looking up — he was active and fighting strong. Fast forward to November 2014, his cancer came back very aggressive and spread rapidly. After a lengthy fight he lost his battle March 11, 2015. My dad was such a bright light, he was my biggest cheerleader, no matter what. He lifted me up and supported me through everything. March 11, 2025 is his 10 year anniversary of his passing. This year I wanted to do something big to honor him. In November, I got into the Boston Marathon and wanted to make him my “why.” He is the reason for my push.

Through pain, sweat, and tears of this training, I carry him with me always. He fought a hard battle and I know he is so proud of me. I will be carrying him proud on April 21st.
