Grace McKenna is running the 2025 Boston Marathon.

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Grace McKenna
Age: 23
From: Boston

When I was five years old, my dad began to lose a part of himself each year. My mother always said it was “like a puzzle that loses its pieces.” After a few difficult years, my dad was diagnosed with PTSD from serving in the Gulf War as a Marine. Even though I was young, I saw first hand just how devastating this diagnosis was. I soon realized that my dad never truly left the battlefield. While many marines combat physical drawbacks after returning home, his challenges were mental.

The Semper Fi & America’s Fund’s mission resonates with my desire to serve others, especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our beautiful nation. Additionally, as a Boston College alum, I hold the Jesuit value of service close to my heart.

Saint Francis said: “For it is in giving that we receive.” I am grateful for the opportunity to run for those who gave their all for me and those who continue to protect this nation, including my brothers, who are attending the United States Naval Academy. I am motivated to improve veterans’ quality of life and ultimately assist them in overcoming everyday barriers that I sometimes take for granted. In return, I know that I have supported these brave men and women who protect me despite the challenges they face.

As the oldest child, I have been given many responsibilities, and I continue to help my siblings so they can learn to excel. I hope that my fundraising efforts can help families of service members, as well.

It is my honor to run the Boston Marathon and make a difference through an activity that I love.

Going forward, I know that I have the potential to achieve more for myself and others.
