This high school senior is running Boston for veterans like his dad
Seth Mendoza is an 18-year-old running in his father's place after a surgery put him out of this year's race.
In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.
Name: Seth Mendoza
Age: 18
From: Mokena, Ill.
I am running the Boston Marathon because my dad was supposed to run the race, but unfortunately, a surgery put him out of this year’s race. So I am running instead.
My dad has run Boston about eight times, always for veteran nonprofit Semper Fi & America’s Fund. I have always done things to challenge myself, so I thought that running the Boston Marathon during my senior year of high school would be pretty special.
I have been training while simultaneously wrestling for my high school team, which has been challenging. I have enjoyed running since I was younger and would always compete in local 5K/10K races and even did a half marathon when I was nine. Running for Semper Fi & America’s Fund is something that is extremely important to me.
I am proud to have already raised over $10,000 for this organization that is very important to our family and has helped us out since my dad was injured in Iraq when I was only three months old. I am excited to run the Boston Marathon to support The Fund, and can’t wait for April 21.
