In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston.

Name: Gabrielle Bazemore
Age: 27
From: Austin, Texas

Why am I running the marathon?

Katie has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. We met as kids, became best friends, and now she’s family. In 2018, everything changed when I got the call — Katie had been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), an aggressive form of cancer. She was immediately transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, where an incredible team of doctors, nurses, and staff fought alongside her.

Bazemore’s close friend, Katie.

As soon as I could, I flew to Boston to be by her side. I witnessed firsthand the unwavering care, expertise, and kindness of the MGH team. Their dedication gave Katie the strength to fight, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Now, six years cancer-free, Katie is thriving. This year, I am running the 129th Boston Marathon in her honor, raising funds for the very place that saved her life. Massachusetts General Hospital was Katie’s home for 42 days, and my goal is to give back so other families can receive the same life-changing care.

Every mile I run is a tribute to Katie’s resilience and the incredible work of MGH. Please join me in supporting their mission. Every dollar raised goes directly toward helping more patients like Katie receive the treatment they need.
