Need a New Vehicle for Towing

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. My snowmobile trailer has a registered gross weight of 3000 pounds and the vehicle I tow it with, my 2003 Jeep Cherokee, is getting tired. What’s the best tow vehicle to purchase? Is it possible or worth putting a new engine in the Jeep? Usually I only have to tow the trailer with the two sleds on it six or eight times per year.

A. There are many choices; almost any mid-sized SUV could tow this trailer without a problem. A new Jeep is a great choice as is the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer and Chevy Tahoe. Regarding putting an engine in your current vehicle, it is certainly possible but I would fully evaluate the Jeep including the under-carriage for rust before spending what could amount to thousands of dollars on repairs.
