Weekend weather: What you need to know for every activity you have planned
Colder weather arrives this weekend, but temperatures will still be seasonable for late January.
Last weekend, we had a thaw. This weekend, we will have more of a freeze.
A cold front passed through the area Thursday, ushering in more seasonable weather, at least in terms of temperatures for the next several days. The thing you will also notice Friday, in addition to the added chill, is the wind. These winds, blowing in from the northwest, will pull in colder air from Canada. This will keep temperatures within a few degrees of normal this weekend, although still likely averaging on the plus side.
There could be a few snow showers in the higher terrain this weekend, but the snow won’t accumulate. It’ll only remind us it is still winter in spite of the recent warmth.
If you’re hitting the roads this weekend…
I am not expecting any precipitation for most areas, and, even in the higher terrain where some snow showers occur, they won’t affect travel.
If you’re heading to Logan Airport…
Amazingly for late January, not only are there no storms here in New England, but the entire country remains storm free. With the exception of some lake effect snow, the lower 48 will be dry this weekend, meaning travel delays from weather will be virtually non-existent.
If you’re going skiing…
There’s been some additional natural snow this week over northern ski areas. This is where you will find the best skiing. Look for a mix of natural and man-made snow on the slopes.

Temperatures will be seasonably cold Saturday.

The chilly weather will continue Sunday, with less wind.
If you’re playing any field games or winter golf…
If the ground is frozen from overnight freezing, it won’t be very deep. Bare ground continues across most of the eastern and central parts of the area. Temperatures won’t be mild, so dress appropriately.
If you’re going hiking or running…
If you are a regular runner or just taking it up, this is a great weekend for you. The warmest part of the day is after 1 p.m until about 3:30 p.m. Temperatures will range from the upper 20s to near 40 from sunrise to sunset.
I will be updating the forecast on Twitter @growingwisdom throughout the weekend.
