Weekend weather: What you need to know for every activity you have planned
The first weekend of meteorological winter will feature typically chilly air for the time of year.
We have a nice day on tap for Friday. There’s a slight chance of a few sprinkles this afternoon as clouds build, but it’s such a small chance, and anything that would fall from the sky would be exceedingly light.
The trend this weekend will be for colder air to filter into the region, but I’m not expecting any major cold or precipitation. Think of this weekend as a basically typical one for early December.
Also remember that the sun is setting at its earliest times of the year now, and that this will continue for a couple more weeks.
If you’re skiing…
Many ski areas are open with a combination of natural and manmade snow. Call ahead to your favorite ski area to be sure it’s operating. The best skiing is farthest north, where it’s colder. This weekend, temperatures will remain in the 30s during the day in the mountains.
If you are going hiking, biking, or running…
This is a good weekend for getting outside and partaking in vigorous activity. You should wear warmer clothes for those early morning walks and runs.

Temperatures will reach the mid 40s on Saturday afternoon.
If you’re playing field games or winter golf…
Both days will feature dry weather so other than some frost, the fields will be dry.
If you’re raking and gardening…
Either day will be a good day for working outside. You can still move perennials and plant bulbs if you can find them or haven’t gotten to it yet. Be sure to mulch tender plants.

Highs will struggle to reach near 40 on Sunday afternoon.
If you’re running errands and holiday shopping…
No weather issues this weekend.
If you’re going to the Patriots game…
The Pats play the Los Angeles Rams at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Gillette. Tailgating and game weather will be similar, with temperatures near 40 degrees and plenty of sunshine. Some clouds will increase later in the day or after sunset as a weather system approaches for Sunday night and Monday.
I will be updating the forecast on Twitter @growingwisdom throughout the weekend.
