Weekend weather: What you need to know for every activity you have planned
This weekend is a return to the norm.
Remember last weekend and the cool air? Welp, that’s ancient meteorological history.
This weekend resumes the pattern of sunshine and warm temperatures we’ve been accustomed to on weekends this summer.
With high pressure building into the region, I expect warm air and moderate levels of humidity. Saturday’s humidity will be higher than Sunday’s. Saturday afternoon will still feel muggy, especially along the south coast.
Away from the urban centers, temperatures should cool enough during the evening, creating more comfortable sleeping weather that’s perfect for evening activities.

High temperatures on Saturday.
If you’re going hiking, biking, or running…
The further inland and north you go this weekend, the drier the air will be. Humidity levels will be highest across the south coast of New England and lowest across northern Vermont, New Hampshire and western Maine.
In the mountains Saturday, there could be a few showers in the afternoon, and it will feel cool when the sun is behind the clouds. Temperatures in the higher elevations Sunday morning could be just under 50 degrees, but warm up quickly after sunrise.
If you’re going beaching and boating…
Northshore of Massachusetts, New Hampshire Seacoast, and the coast of Maine: Tides are high at about 10 a.m., give or take, depending on the beach. Astronomically, this is an average weekend for tide height, meaning plenty of room at the beaches even during high tide. Boaters will enjoy a light west wind Saturday, with slight seas two-to-four feet. Sunday winds will be more easterly, with similar wave heights.

High temperatures on Sunday.
Water temperatures have warmed well into the 60s and lower 70s. The water will be warmer on Sunday with the easterly wind, which tends to push warmer water towards the shore.
If you’re playing soccer, softball, baseball, or golf…
Saturday’s forecast: A warm start to the day with noticeable humidity. Some fields and greens might be wet early in the day, depending on how many showers an area received the night before.
Sunday’s outlook: More dry weather with less humidity. Temperatures continue to be rather warm in the afternoon, well into the 80s.
If you’re gardening…
The drought has worsened over most areas in the past week, so water your plants early in the day and for a longer period of time. Try not to get the leaves wet if possible. A typical empty tuna can measures about an inch of rain water. You need that much each week for most plants, including vegetables. Read more about caring for you plants during the drought here.
If you’re running errands…
I routinely mention just how hot the car can become when parked on sunny days. On Saturday, with nearly full sunshine, you’ll definitely want to leave the windows open a tiny bit to avoid returning to a hot car. Never leave pets inside the car, as even with some air flow the temperatures can easily exceed 100 degrees.
It won’t really matter which day you do your errands since the weather looks to be great both days, but there might be a few more clouds on Sunday especially on Cape Cod.
If you’re going to a concert, outdoor party or wedding…
Rain won’t be a factor either day, but the humidity will be highest on Saturday. This means it will be a bit uncomfortable during the hottest part of the afternoon. Sunday is still warm, but less humid. You’ll have perfect weather in the evening for watching Luke Bryan at Gillette or Dead and Company at Fenway Park. Even Sunday evening’s concert at Fenway Park with Sir Paul McCartney will take place under ideal weather conditions. Evening temperatures will be falling out of the 80s and into the 70s.
I will be updating the forecast on Twitter @growingwisdom throughout the weekend.
