Weekend weather: What you need to know for every activity you have planned

A bit of a chill in the air Thursday morning doesn’t really feel like summer, but our second weekend in June has arrived and there are lots of activities to enjoy.

While the heat won’t be a problem this weekend, there’s sure to be some of that in the coming weeks. This is the kind of weekend you’ll be able to perform most outdoor activities without the weather getting in the way.

The biggest challenge to the forecast is whether showers will pop-up Saturday afternoon and early evening as the air becomes briefly muggy.

As a matter of fact, Saturday morning will have a similar crispness in the air that Thursday did, leading some of you to grab a light jacket before heading out.

In terms of rain this weekend, there is going to be a front crossing the area Saturday night. Presently, I think two things about the showers. First, not everyone will see them, but there could be a brief rumble of thunder. Second, the showers may come in earlier than forecast a day ago—meaning Saturday afternoon—but leaving us with a second, mostly sunny day for the weekend. It will be breezy Sunday.

High Temperatures Saturday June 11th

The high temperatures for Saturday, June 11.

If you’re going hiking, biking, or running…

Cool is the theme on Saturday morning, with temperatures in the 50s for the first few hours after sunrise. High temperatures during the afternoon will be in the 70s with a slightly humid air mass.

If you’re going beaching and boating…

North Shore, New Hampshire Seacoast and Maine: tides are high at about 5 a.m and at 5 p.m this weekend. Winds are going to be light from the southwest on Saturday and northwest on Sunday. I don’t expect seas to get very high, only around 2-3 feet. Watch for a pop-up storm Saturday afternoon or evening.

Water temperatures are still cool. Some beaches haven’t even reached the 60-degree mark across the North Shore, but they are in the 60s to the south. It will really feel cool on Sunday when you get out of the water.

If you’re playing soccer, softball, baseball, or golf…

Saturday’s forecast: A cool air mass early in the day means you might need a light jacket when you begin play. However, the strong June sunshine will boost temperatures into the 60s by 10 a.m., and they should reach the 70s by noon. It will feel a bit muggy late in the day. Watch for a round of showers possible in some towns, even into Boston after 2 p.m.

Sunday’s outlook: Any showers will end very early on Sunday. If a shower does cross the area, you’ll need to be aware of wet fields and greens. It will feel slightly muggy in the morning, but the air will dry during the day. Highs will be well into the 70s.

If you’re gardening…

Although there was some rain earlier this week (and you might see a shower Saturday afternoon or early at night) weeding and watering are the two primary tasks for gardeners; you can still plant warm weather crops. I will be putting in some beans, lettuce, choys and kale this weekend. It’s important to keep the soil evenly moist with all this dry weather.

If you’re running errands…

If you’re looking for the best time to run errands, I might pick Saturday late in the afternoon when clouds increase and there is a chance for showers. But it’s almost a toss-up: Sunday turns out mainly sunny too after the morning clouds decrease. The weather will be a bit cooler Sunday afternoon by a few degrees along with a breeze, highs 68-74.

If you’re taking part in Boston’s Gay Pride celebration

Whether it’s the parade on Saturday or the block parties on Sunday, the weather looks sunny for this year’s festivities with the exception of a possible pop-up line of storms Saturday afternoon. Keep an eye on the radar and I will update on Twitter @growingwisdom. Be sure to bring sunscreen.
