Weekend weather looking dry, good news for outdoor plans
Sunday looks mainly dry and cool, but there is some summer heat in the long-range forecast.
Good news for those of you with outdoor plans, we can now expect a dry weekend.
A coastal storm system was expected to come close enough to land to bring some much needed rain, but it now appears to be staying to the south and out to sea. The Cape could still see a shower, however.
The predicted track and forecast of these low pressure areas shifts with each successive model run. We need the rain, so personally I don’t think this is good news. The chart below shows how much rain has fallen in Boston over the past few months. The solid line would be average. You’ll notice how this winter we had a small surplus of water, but now that’s gone, and we are growing a deficit.

Today will feature an increase in clouds, but no rain. By the evening, it will be mostly cloudy. Tomorrow will also see a lot of clouds and the chance for some morning showers south of Plymouth. In the afternoon, it will remain rather cool, but there is no rain expected. There may even be a few breaks of sunshine. If you’re headed to Fenway Park this weekend, bring a jacket or sweater as it might be a bit cool.
The next chance of rain is Tuesday. If that doesn’t occur, things will dry up really fast because the heat is coming. Next week, high pressure will begin to pump warm—and perhaps even humid air—into the region.
Dew points by the end of next week and into Memorial Day weekend could be in the 60s to near 70 which is mid-summer humidity. The image below is from the American model, and while this will change, a forecast of heat and humidity is showing up on most models.

Besides the humidity on the way, heat is also coming. Temperatures inland will approach 90 degrees towards the end of next week and over the weekend. The duration of the heat is still questionable as this pattern is unfolding, and it’s still a week away.

While you might not be mentally ready for summer yet, use this weekend to get the air conditioners put into windows. The cool weekend is also a good time to do some of the heavier labor tasks of spring, because you won’t want to be doing it next weekend in the heat.
