Weekend weather: What you need to know for every activity you have planned
There are showers in the forecast, but they shouldn't dampen your to-do list.
The past two days have been nothing short of stunning. When you think of perfect weather in May, I hope you agree that Wednesday and Thursday of this week more than qualified.
As the week has progressed, the timing of showers this weekend has shifted a bit, and in many ways shifted for the better. What I mean by that is that most of this weekend’s daylight hours will be dry, allowing you and me to do whatever we have planned without the worry of rain.
Saturday is the milder day, with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s. A return to cooler air Sunday brings readings back to the 50s.
If you’re going hiking, biking, or running…
Last weekend I did end up hiking part of the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire, and I got quite wet. This weekend will see a period of showers Friday night and again overnight Saturday. However, it will be dry and quite sunny during the day Saturday and Sunday. Across northern New England, a pop-up shower might occur in the mountains Sunday in the cool air.
If you’re going beaching and boating…
North Shore, New Hampshire Seacoast, and Maine: Tides are high at about 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. this weekend, shifting toward 8 in both the a.m. and p.m. late in the weekend. Boaters need to be aware of a southerly flow of air Saturday that will shift to the west on Sunday.
South Shore to Nantucket Sound: Check your local tide charts for the exact time of high tides, although they will be similar to those of the northern coastal waters. Winds will be quite gusty on Sunday from the west/southwest, as high as 30 miles per hour.
If you’re playing soccer, softball, baseball, or golf…
Saturday’s forecast: With overnight showers Friday, the fields will likely be damp on Saturday morning. Because it’s been so dry the past week, the ground will absorb most of the water quite quickly, though fields with poor drainage could have some puddles early. Golf courses should be in great shape after the showers and some warm weather. Showers do move into the area Saturday evening and overnight.
Sunday’s outlook: Any showers will end before dawn on Sunday. You’ll notice it’s quite a bit cooler on Sunday—take a light jacket with you in the early and late parts of the day.
If you’re gardening…
It’s still early to put warm-weather crops into the ground—temperatures in the 30s are expected Monday and perhaps Tuesday morning. Although I don’t see a frost in our future, those readings are too cold for things like basil and peppers. However, both days this weekend will give you plenty of time to get the yard in great shape. If you have planted grass, you’ll have to keep it evenly moist by hand on Sunday, as much of the upcoming week appears dry.
If you’re running errands…
No weather issues during the day this weekend—any showers Saturday will hold off until the late part of the afternoon, even more likely post-sunset. This band of rain is moving quickly and will leave us dry and cooler for Sunday.
If you’re heading to Fenway…
The Houston Astros are in town with a Friday night game and Saturday and Sunday day games. For the day games, I don’t see any weather-related issues, but there could be showers during the Friday evening game.

Predicted high temperatures for Sunday, May 15.
