A dense fog advisory until 7 p.m. could affect visibility during the evening commute
Dense fog advisories are not typically issued in December.

The fog, seen here in South Boston, is expected to get worse early this evening.
The National Weather Service has issued a “dense fog advisory’’ in New England until 7 p.m., which could impact the evening commute.
The advisory is aimed at western and central Massachusetts, the south coast including the Cape and Islands, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
“Areas of fog will be locally dense at times,’’ according to the advisory. “Particularly later this afternoon and early this evening.’’
This type of advisory is issued when dense fog reduces visibility for one-quarter mile or less for at least three hours, said Kim Buttrick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton.

The gray areas are under dense fog advisory.
“They’re not typically issued in December,’’ she said. “This is more something that we would issue in April or May — in the spring. But, interestingly enough, today is more typically a spring day.’’
The fog is the result of a warm front carrying moisture, said Buttrick. The normal high for Dec. 14 is 42 degrees, and the Boston temperature at 1 p.m. was 47 degrees and climbing, she said.
“We are expecting highs to get into the 50s,’’ she said.
According to the advisory, “dense fog will lead to rapid reduction in visibility … which can make driving hazardous.’’
“If you are driving, use caution,’’ Buttrick said. “Give enough space between you and the driver in front of you.’’
