Forecasters say next winter won’t be as bad

Boston is already prepping for next winter’s snow farm, but meteorologists say the weather won’t be as bad as last year.

Massachusetts can expect a stormy winter ahead, The Boston Globe reports, but the temperatures will be milder and the amount of snowfall shouldn’t exceed previous averages. We hope.

The storminess will come from a strong El Niño—a weather pattern powered by a band of warm ocean water off of the equatorial Pacific coast—senior meteorologist Bob Smerbeck told the Globe. That usually results in above-average temperatures for our area. Other factors will cause some cold blasts and snowstorms, though.

The city’s average snowfall per winter is about 43 inches of snow. Last year’s total exceeded 100 inches.

“The likelihood of us seeing that again this year is pretty slim,’’ Rebecca Gould, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Globe.
