Updates: MBTA Stacks Sandbags at Fenway Station to Prevent Potential Flooding
It could be a slow evening commute for many Boston residents this evening. Heavy rain has caused flooding and lane closures on multiple roads throughout the area.
Strong winds are expected to peak in Boston between the early afternoon and 5 p.m, with the heaviest part of the storm occuring in the evening, according to Boston.com’s David Esptein.
Shuttle buses have replaced service on the D branch between Kenmore and Fenway.
The MBTA sent workers to Fenway Station to set up a barricade out of sandbags in order to limit potential flooding from the Muddy River, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. The river, usually seven to eight feet deep, has risen to more than 16 feet deep.
“We are taking these precautionary measures so that we may avoid a repeat of the events of October 1996,’’ he wrote in an email. “The dams were built to avoid a repeat of the events of October 1996 when waters from the Muddy River rushed into the Green Line tunnel, causing millions of dollars in damage to signals, utilities, and tracks.’’
