Mayor Michelle Wu declared a heat emergency for Boston from Wednesday through Friday, with the heat index predicted to fluctuate from 91 to 97 degrees with little overnight relief, the city announced.

“Our top priority is to protect the health and safety of all Bostonians, especially our most vulnerable residents,” said Mayor Michelle Wu in a statement Tuesday. “As temperatures continue to rise, the City is here to support residents in every way possible.”

Most of the state and southern New England are under a heat advisory through 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in Boston are expected to reach 92 degrees Wednesday and 90 Thursday, with high humidity both days, according to 7 News. The temperature and humidity will drop on Friday at an estimated 84 degrees.

Boston declares a heat emergency when the heat index is predicted to hit 95 degrees for two days.

To stay cool, city officials recommend visiting splash pads, public pools, cooling centers, and Boston Public Library locations that will be open for regular hours this week.

“We urge all residents to stay cool, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors—especially older adults and those most vulnerable,” Boston’s Chief of Emergency Preparedness Adrian Jordan said in the statement.
