Here’s NOAA’s 2024-2025 winter forecast for Massachusetts
NOAA recently released its outlook for the winter season for the months of December, January, and February.
New England can expect warmer than normal temperatures this winter season, experts say.
NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recently released its outlook for the 2024-2025 winter season for the months of December, January, and February.
NOAA Head of Forecast Operations Scott Handel says he relied on recent trends to make the outlook predictions.
“Those recent trends show among the strongest warm trends across New England,” Handel, who authored the outlook, told Boston.com. “New England has a lot of the strongest warm trends as compared to most places in the country.”
Some of the recent trends come as a result of “above normal” sea surface temperatures adjacent to the New England coast.

As for precipitation, Handel said the probabilities for above normal precipitation in New England are “quite weak,” and Boston is favoring equal chances of above or below normal precipitation.
There is a 33% to 40% chance of above normal precipitation for the state of New Hampshire and for northern and western Massachusetts, he said.
Still, Handel said there is a lot of “variability.”
“Boston, oftentimes, gets decent snow, regardless of the year,” he said. “Be prepared for winter weather all through the season.”
