Boston is entering an “unsettled period” of weather for the week that could have temperatures soar into the 80s on Wednesday before plunging about 30 degrees into the 50s on Thursday, according to local forecasters. There could also be rain and thunderstorms in the  middle of the week, the National Weather Service predicts.Forecasters were not in sync when it came to predicting just how warm it will get on Wednesday. The service forecasts a high of 75 degrees with a chance of rain showers and thunderstorms. The chance of rain is set at 50 percent.

“BIG changes ahead,” WBZ meteorologist Terry Eliasen said. His forecast predicts Wednesday’s high at 76 degrees, then dropping to a high of 55 on Thursday. The average for this time of year is 68 degrees.

However, Barry Burbank, a meteorologist with WBZ, predicts Wednesday could reach 88 degrees. He said the high temperature depends on when a cold front arrives.

“If the cold front is tardy in arrival, it could be well into the 80s near and south of the MA Pike,” he said. “It COULD fall to the 60s in the afternoon.”

Meteorologist David Epstein notes that predictions for the Norwood airport indicate that Wednesday could reach 86 degrees. He said 90 degrees is “not out of the realm of possibility” south of the Mass Pike.

Thursday comes with the drastic temperature drop – the service predicts a high of 56 degrees – and a 50 percent chance of rain; that chance increases to 60 percent that night.
