Here’s how Hurricane Humberto will impact New England surf conditions
"Observe the surf from a safe distance."
Meteorologists are warning beachgoers of the dangerous surf conditions Hurricane Humberto is expected to usher in this week in New England as the storm travels up the Atlantic Ocean.
“The subsequent swell generated by the storm will result in dangerous surf and rip currents for the Southern New England coastline definitely through this Friday, perhaps lingering into the weekend,” the National Weather Service’s Boston office wrote in a tweet Wednesday.

Now a Category 3 storm, Humberto is anticipated to reach Bermuda Wednesday night, bringing tropical-storm-force winds and possibly coastal flooding to the island, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“Swells will continue to affect the northwestern Bahamas and the southeastern coast of the United States from east-central Florida to North Carolina during the next couple of days, creating life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,” the center said.
In New England, the service has issued rip current statements warning of the dangerous conditions along most of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island coasts, including Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard.
A small craft advisory is also in place.
The advisories are in effect through Friday afternoon.
“(With) the absence of life guards, we encourage everyone to exercise caution if you’re heading to the beach,” the service said in a tweet. “Observe the surf from a safe distance.”
