It’ll be cold later this week. Here’s a quick glance at what to expect.
"This is not a prolonged cold snap."
There’s still quite some time until winter officially kicks off, but New England will get a brief taste of its chilly air later this week with a potentially record-setting cold temperature Thursday.
Cold air from Canada is set to sweep in behind a cold front moving across the region, Bill Simpson, a spokesman for the National Weather Service, said Tuesday.
Boston may see a record low for a high temperature Thursday if temperatures come in just below the forecasted 45 degrees, according to Simpson, who said the current record, set back in 1898, stands at 45 degrees.
But don’t worry — the cold air isn’t here to stay.
“This is not a prolonged cold snap,” Simpson said. “It’s a brief shot of cold air, moderately speaking.”
Here’s what National Weather Service forecasters are predicting in the coming days:
Thursday
High: 45 degrees
Low: Mid-30s, although west of Boston beyond Route 128 could see temperatures near or below freezing, Simpson said.
Weather: Sunny and clear
Friday
High: 55 degrees
Low: 48 degrees at night in Boston, with morning lows in the mid-to-upper 20s west of Interstate 495, according to Simpson.
Weather: Sunny skies
Saturday
High: 60 degrees
Low: Mid-40s at night
Weather: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of morning showers
Sunday
High: 50 degrees
Low: Mid-30s at night
Weather: Mostly sunny
