With temperatures expected in the 50s, next week won’t feel like winter at all

How does 51 degrees sound?

It looks like Southern New England will get a reprieve from the January cold, with forecasters at the National Weather Service in Taunton predicting highs in the mid-40s and low 50s by the middle and end of next week.

“It’s going to be much warmer than normal, absolutely,” said Eleanor Valliero-Talbot, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The region will still be far enough away from the 60-degree mark, avoiding any new records.

Temperatures haven’t climbed into the 60s during the same week in more than 20 years. It hit a record 64 degrees on Jan. 16, 1995, and 63 degrees on Jan. 18, 1990, Valliero-Talbot said.

“We’re right at about at the coldest time of the year right now, on average,” said Valliero-Talbot. “Now is the time when [temperatures] start to creep up.”

So should you put away your heavy winter coat? Not so fast.

“We could have another cold spell yet,” Valliero-Talbot said.
