Fall in New England

Everything you need to know about the weather for Halloween weekend

Whether you're trick or treating or heading to a costume party.

Just five years ago, heavy snow across the area canceled many Halloween trick or treating nights across parts of southern New England. The snow, which fell just a few days before Halloween, amounted to over a foot in some areas.

Luckily, no snow is in the forecast this year. It also appears that there’s zero chance of rain for two of the next three nights, with just a chance of showers later in the evening on Sunday.

Because we are still on daylight saving time, the sun won’t set until about 5:40 p.m. each night. This means there will be enough light to see clearly until about 6 p.m. For trick-or-treaters, police recommend you take a flashlight to see once it’s dark.

Saturday evening from 4-8 p.m.

The sky will be partly to mostly cloudy. There won’t be any rainfall, and temperatures will fall from the mid 50s to the lower 50s during this time period. Winds will be brisk and make it feel a bit colder than the actual air temperatures.

Sunday evening from 4-8 p.m.

The map below shows an area of rain, in green, over much of southern New England around 8 p.m. While I don’t expect the showers to be heavy, there will be enough rain to wet roads, make it more difficult to see, and cause leaves to become slippery.

Of course, none of this is a major issue. If you’re headed to an event or a Halloween party, take an umbrella and enjoy the evening. Look for milder air with temperatures in the low to mid 50s throughout this window.

Monday, Halloween evening, from 4-8 p.m.

While some treat Halloween like a holiday, most of us will be coming home from work during this time. Remember that there will be kids on the street.

I think the weather will be nice, but cool Monday evening. Temperatures will fall through the 40s during this time period and end up into the 30s late in the evening.

The start of November will see a warming trend, with plenty of sunshine next week. Happy Halloween!
