Harvard’s Kenyatta Smith ruled out for season

A broken right foot will force Harvard center Kenyatta Smith to sit out the remainder of the basketball season.

The 6-foot-8-inch junior had already missed the first 17 games of the season after suffering a hairline fracture in the same foot five days before the Crimson’s season opener.

He spent two months in a walking boot, letting the injury heal, before returning for two full-contact practices last week. He made his debut last Sunday against Dartmouth, getting on the floor for two pressure-free minutes in a blowout.

The Crimson have dealt with injuries throughout the season, with leading scorer Wesley Saunders (knee) and backup guard Brandyn Curry (foot) both missing time.

Coach Tommy Amaker was cautiously optimistic about the return of Smith, who had a breakthrough sophomore season, emerging as the team’s best post scorer and rim protector.
