Barge springs leak after collision with tug in Cape Cod Canal
A tug and barge scraped collided with each other late Tuesday, causing the barge to take on a small amount of water near the Cape Cod Canal, the US Coast Guard said.
At about 11:28 p.m., dispatchers in Woods Hole were notified by the crew of a 112-f00t tugboat, the Doris Morian, that the boat had lost power while towing a 410-foot barge, the Alexander.
The barge, which was carrying cement to New York, sprung a leak after the two vessels came in contact, and took on about 10 gallons of water, said Adam Stanton, Coast Guard spokesman.
The Doris Morian managed to tow the Alexander 2 miles to an anchorage in
Buzzards Bay, officials said.
Coast Guard crews pumped water out of the barge when they arrived on scene. The barge was taking on roughly 2 inches of water per hour when crews arrived, Stanton said.
No injuries or fuel spills were reported.
The collision is under investigation.
