FlightCar launches new car-sharing service

Do you own a car but only need it four days a month?

Then FlightCar has a deal for you.

The company, which rents travelers’ cars at the airport while they are out of town, is launching a new service today that pays people $150-$400 a month to rent out their vehicles for 26 days a month. Car owners will get paid whether their cars are rented or not, and if theirs are in use on the day they want to use them, they will be given another car free of charge.

FlightCar, which launched at a lot near Logan International Airport in May, is appealing to city dwellers who have to pay for parking, marketing their service as a kind of free parking program with guaranteed income and limited use of the car. FlightCar will pick up the vehicle from car owners, and for $20, will return it when the owner wants to use it. Vehicles are insured for up to $1 million, parked in a secure lot, and washed after each rental.

FlightCar, a Cambridge company started by three teenagers, operates in San Francisco and Boston. The car-sharing company is being sued by the city of San Francisco for refusing to pay fees required of other rental car companies at San Francisco International Airport.
