SomerStreet Carnaval

Somerville’s 4th Annual SomerStreets Series kicked off with its Carnaval on June 2. The community gathered to shop locally, listen to music, meet artists, and celebrate Somerville with free family activities.
Banda de Paz el Salvador marched in the SomerStreet Carnaval parade.

Students from the East Somerville Community School participated in the parade .

Many children dressed in bright colors and carried props.

Members from OnStage Dance Company, a nonprofit dance organization located in Somerville, performed a routine during the parade .

Children from Somerville’s OPENAIR Circus walked on stilts.

Girls from Boston’s Banda de Paz el Salvador marched in the parade with pom poms.

The Reina de Loma Larga marched.

Aidan Barry, 4, got his face painted in honor of Batman, his favorite superhero.

Children took funny pictures with cut-out props at the SomerStreet Carnaval.

Children were invited to make their own masks at the craft center. They used crayons, markers, and sequins to personalize their own disguises.

Somerville Public Schools provided drums for attendees to play.

Davey the Clown played his accordion at the Carnaval. He invited children to play back up bells and horn accompaniments.

Many local restaurants and stores offered food for purchase and to sample. The East End Grill provided nacho samples.

The Dunk Tank became a popular activity, both for people who wanted to play and volunteer to be dunked.

Zumba instructor Jillian Webster of OnStage Dance Company demonstrated her classes and invited community members to participate.

During her workout demonstration, Zumba instructor Jillian Webster showed one little girl how to salsa.

Community members enjoyed lawn games such as ladder ball and soccer at the Carnaval.

Children blew bubbles and played with bubble toys.

Many children took advantage of the face painting station .

Children were invited to explore the Somerville Fire Department’s trucks and tools throughout the afternoon.
