Cambridge Street reopens after sinkhole causes temporary road closure
The 6-foot by 8-foot sinkhole that caused Cambridge Street to close late Sunday afternoon has been temporarily fixed.
The Cambridge Department of Public Works installed a steel plate on top of the sink hole and will make a permanent fix in the future, according to Daniel Riviello, a Cambridge Police Department spokesman.
The sinkhole, located near the intersection of Oak Street and Cambridge Street, was reported at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Riviello said in a statement.
The MBTA rerouted buses affected by the road closure until Cambridge Street reopened at 8:45 p.m., said Riviello.
Riviello said that while sinkholes are unusual, Cambridge has experienced them in the past.
