While Boston sweats in a not-quite heat wave, cooler weather in Nantucket

Temperatures in Boston reached 90 degrees for the second consecutive day, but a heat wave — three or more days of 90-degree heat — is not likely, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat held steady at 90 degrees this afternoon, with a slight southwesterly wind and 40 percent humidity.

“We’ve still got three or four hours of heating left in the day, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them hit 91-92 before the day is out,’’ National Weather Service Meteorologist Rebecca Gould said this afternoon.

While Boston sweltered, the air conditioning was off in the Fog Island Cafe on Nantucket, where the National Weather Service predicted temperatures will reach only 68 degrees.

Today is the last day of the season to get hot soup at the restaurant, said Sabrina Dawson, the daughter of owners Mark and Anne Dawson, who opened the cafe in 1993.

“It’s actually been hard to sell out the rest of the soup, just because of the warm weather we’ve been having,’’ she said.

Achieving official heat wave status is possible but not likely in Boston, said Gould, predicting Sunday’s highs would be in the mid-80s, with thunderstorms rolling into western Massachusetts in the evening, then moving eastward and cooling the region.

Rain should reach Boston around 11 p.m. and continue through Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.
