UMass president begins 500-mile bus tour
The president of the University of Massachusetts set out on a 500-mile bus tour today in an effort to highlight the academic excellence and economic contribution of the five-campus university.
Making his first stops in Springfield and Holyoke this morning, Robert L. Caret will visit alumni startup companies, UMass research centers, and other university landmarks in the state throughout the four-day tour which ends in Worcester Thursday, the university said.
“We live in a state rich in colleges and universities. Throughout the world, the name Massachusetts is synonymous with higher education excellence,’’ Caret said in a statement. “While we have these many great schools, I would argue that the University of Massachusetts stands out in a particular way and has a singular importance to the state.’’
This is Caret’s second bus tour. He also took one last year.
UMass is the largest university in New England with 71,000 students enrolled across the five campuses. The university awards about 15,000 degrees annually. The school will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2013.
“For 150 years, the University of Massachusetts has been guided by its singular mission of serving the people of Massachusetts and building Massachusetts into the great state that it has become. The Commonwealth’s cause has been – and always will be – our cause,’’ Caret said.
