Author Judy Blume discloses breast cancer

Martha’s Vineyard celebrity and author Judy Blume (inset) revealed to fans on her blog on Wednesday that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and is recovering from a mastectomy. She reports that “it’s one month post surgery — I’m still in NY and feeling stronger every day, walking a couple of miles in the park each morning and going out to early dinners with [husband] George [Cooper]. Have seen movies and a couple of plays, as you know if you follow me on Twitter. I’m able to read again without falling asleep. Which doesn’t mean I don’t need a nap every day. I’m not working on my book yet (have just been given permission to type an hour at a time with arm exercises in between) but I’m thinking about getting back to it after Labor Day, kind of like starting school.’’ You can find the entire post, which details Blume’s medical choices and a few “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret’’ jokes, on Blume’s website. Blume, 74, also reported via Twitter that she’ll be on the Vineyard on Saturday night for the Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival screening of “Tiger Eyes,’’ which is based on her young adult novel. The movie was directed by Blume’s son, Lawrence Blume. “Q&A after,’’ she tweeted.
