Boston police officer shoots and kills suspect after foot chase in South End
A traffic stop turned deadly late Tuesday afternoon when Boston police shot and killed a man in the South End, authorities said.
Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said the incident began shortly after 5:45 p.m. when officers initiated a motor vehicle stop. A chase pursued after the suspect fled from the car on foot.
On Yarmouth Street, two officers pursued the suspect for a couple of blocks, Davis said. When the suspect displayed a gun, officers ordered him to drop it, but he refused, according to Davis.
One of the officers fired one round from a service weapon and struck the suspect, who has not been identified, in the chest, Davis said. The suspect was later pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.
This is a “very active investigation,’’ Davis said. Investigators are looking at surveillance video and are talking to witnesses.
Davis said the two Boston police officers who pursued the suspect were taken to a hospital for treatment as well. No condition on the officers was available, and no additional details were available from police Tuesday night.
