Bill Maher prepares for local comedy in the round
“Real Time With Bill Maher’’ host Bill Maher doesn’t think Massachusetts is special, at least not as an audience. The political commentator and comedian told us by phone this week that the Bay State fans who attend his live shows are indistinguishable from audiences in other cities. “People who go to see you like you,’’ he explained, dryly, adding that while he never gets hecklers, he occasionally sees some “husbands dragged by wives’’ in the front row. Maher added that his most enthusiastic stand-up fans are never in places like Massachusetts. They’re usually in the very red states, where Maher’s liberal philosophies are a rare treat. “They feel like they’re the minority,’’ he told us. Maher did admit that Massachusetts gigs are a bit different because we have a history with one of his favorite targets, our former governor Mitt Romney. And his local gigs — which are at the Cape Cod Melody Tent on Saturday and the South Shore Music Circus on Sunday — give him the chance to experience theater in the round. “It’s not my favorite,’’ he joked, of the Melody Tent and Music Circus stages, which are set to spin during shows. “The stage is a Lazy Susan.’’ (For the record, the folks with the Melody Tent and the Music Circus promise that the rotating stage will be turned off for Maher’s comedy gigs.) Maher’s Cape gig is sold out, but there are still tickets for the Music Circus show in Cohasset.
