Man escapes injury when large forklift catches fire at Conley Terminal in South Boston
A forklift operator in the Conley Terminal in South Boston narrowly escaped injury this afternoon by leaping off the machine before it caught fire, officials said.
The man, whose name was not released, was operating the machine, which is used to shift large shipping containers around the Massport facility. The worker was alerted to the danger by the odor of a engine burning, said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.
The operator jumped off the machinery shortly before fire spread over the equipment. The fire department spent 45 minutes dousing the fire, which heavily damaged the machine. MacDonald estimated that the fire caused $300,000 in damages.
The cause is under investigation.
