Cambridge City Hall Annex closed after small fire in basement

Electricity has been cut off to the City Hall Annex building in Cambridge after a small fire occurred in the basement this morning, according to City Manager Bob Healy.

Some insulation caught fire while work was being done to the heat exchange pump, Healy said. There was some smoke and water damage in the basement, but the rest of the building was not affected by the fire.

Healy said the building will be closed today, but hopes it will be open tomorrow.

The 141-year-old Annex building is the first municipal building in Cambridge to be renovated as a LEED certified, or “green building’’ in 2003. It was built in 1871 as the Harvard Grammar school and was converted to municipal use in 1939.
