Rob Gronkowski says having a gay teammate is fine with him

might not be afraid to take his clothes off for the cover of ESPN The Magazine, but he is afraid of putting his foot in his mouth. That’s apparently why he shied away from a red carpet interview before the ESPY Awards last week with Outsports.com, a blog that covers the gay sports community. Blog president Cyd Zeigler Jr.
posted an entry on Monday explaining that Gronk walked away from an interview with him at first because “he was just afraid of saying something wrong. I understood where he was coming from. While he’s been the darling of the media at times since first appearing in the NFL in 2010, he’s also been the target of some nasty attacks by the media and fans. It seems every time he opens his mouth or appears in the media, he gets roasted for it.’’ When Gronk finally gave Zeigler some interview time before the ESPYs, Zeigler asked him whether he’d be comfortable if one of his Patriots teammates came out this season. The tight end responded, “I mean, we’re teammates so, as long as he’s being a good teammate and being respectful and everything, that’s cool.’’ The Globe Sports section reported Sunday that Gronk’s time in the spotlight might be over; he’s apparently been told by his team to stop being such an extrovert.
