A two-alarm blaze this morning in Cambridge displaced two adults and sent one firefighter to the hospital for heat-related injuries, the Cambridge fire department said.

Firefighters arrived at the old, wood-framed, three-story home on Irving Street at around 9 a.m. to discover smoke coming from the rear roof. The homeowner had hired painters who were using a heat gun to strip paint. That sparked the fire, said Assistant Fire Chief Gerry Mahoney. The homeowner was home at the time of the fire.

According to Mahoney, the painters attempted to extinguish the fire on their own. Additional engines were ordered to the scene to keep the fire under control in the hot and humid weather conditions.

The firefighter who was transported to the hospital is in good condition, Mahoney said. No other injuries were reported.

The displaced couple, who rent out the smoke-damaged third floor, are receiving help from American Red Cross and are looking for family or friends to stay with.
