Two people are recovering after being struck by lightning while watching fireworks in South Boston.

Boston police said in a statement that a 29-year-old male and a 29-year-old female were injured when struck by lightning just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The victims were conscious when Boston EMS personnel arrived at the scene and were transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

A giant lightning strike in the middle of the fireworks display was clearly visible from Robbins Farm Park in Arlington outside Boston, where area residents gathered on a hillside to watch the downtown fireworks on the horizon.

The lightning bolt appeared to the Arlington viewers to strike right in the middle of the fireworks. Maps showed that Thomas Park in South Boston, the site of the lightning strike, is on a straight line about three miles behind where the display was launched.

The lightning provoked cheers from the Arlington crowd, elated at seeing “nature’s fireworks’’ — and unaware that people had been injured.
