Commuter train derails in Rhode Island; no injuries
A commuter train bound for Boston was canceled this evening after a slow-speed derailment near the Wickford Junction station in North Kingstown, R.I., officials said.
Shortly after 7 p.m., two wheels of the train came off the rail, according to Scott Farmelant, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co.
“An axle got off the rails,’’ he said. “It did not tip over, it is upright.’’
Two passengers and two or three crew members were onboard when the derailment occurred, Farmelant said. No one was injured and there was no major damage to the train, he said. The train runs on the Providence/Stoughton line.
The train was traveling between 10 and 15 miles per hour when the derailment occurred, Farmelant said.
“The cause of the incident is under investigation,’’ he said. “We’re looking at whether it was the train, the rail, or some other equipment malfunction.’’
