Dunkin’ Donuts: Many summer travelers use GPS devices to track down road-trip food options

As the summer travel season cranks up, a new Dunkin’ Donuts survey finds that just over a third of travelers use a GPS device or some other form of travel technology to scout out potential pit stops for food and beverages.

To help folks plot their routes without straying too far afield from the civilizing influences of its many cafes, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked-goods chain is talking up the Trip Planner feature on its website. According to a Dunkin’ press release, travelers who avail themselves of Trip Planner will be able to map out Dunkin’ locations along their road trip.

Some new cars can get 400 miles from a tank of gas, but the survey suggests that many Americans would be hard pressed to go 100 miles without stopping to get watered and fed.

In the survey, 59 percent of respondents said they make at least two or more stops for food or drinks during a summer road trip, and 31 percent said they stopped three times or more.

Dunkin’ said the polling firm GfK Roper helped conduct its survey. Interviewing was done by telephone from June 8 through June 10. A total of 1,004 interviews with consumers aged 18 and older was completed.

Worldwide, more than 10,000 restaurants operate under the Dunkin’ brand. In 2011, the chain’s global franchisees reported sales of $6.4 billion.
