Black bear reported near Spectacle Pond in Littleton

Residents in Littleton were alerted this morning after a black bear was observed roaming the area near Spectacle Pond, police said.

“A call went out to residents because it was during school-bus time, and we felt it necessary to alert residents that there was a bear sighting in the area,’’ said Pamela Cvitkovich, an administrative assistant for the Littleton police.

“A couple’’ of residents called to report the bear about 7:30 this morning, according to a police dispatcher. The bear was seen walking across Great Road toward Spectacle Pond, the dispatcher said. He did not know the bear’s size.

Meanwhile, as of this morning, there had not been a confirmed sighting of the infamous Cape Cod black bear since Thursday morning, state wildlife officials said. That bear has been spotted in several Cape towns, most recently near Provincetown, since it appeared there on May 27.

State wildlife officials have said they’re ready to remove the itinerant animal from the Cape now that it apparently has reached its end and has nowhere to go. The officials say they’ve been preparing to trap or tranquilize the bear in the interest of public safety and then relocate it to an environment with other bears.

The bear is thought to be the same one that frequented much of Southeastern Massachusetts last summer. Officials say it probably got to the Cape by swimming across the Cape Cod Canal.
